esports coach speaking to commission
At this week’s City Commission Meeting, Mayor Sam Cobb officially proclaimed May 19, 2025 as Hobbs Municipal Schools Hobbs High School ESports Day” in the City of Hobbs.
ESports is the fastest growing competitive entertainment activity in the world, with New Mexico proudly leading the charge at the high school level with two of the top 10 teams in the nation. The New Mexico Activities Association (NMAA) officially sanctioned high school ESports for the 2018/19 school year, and Hobbs High School joining the league the following year, winning a regional title for Smite with a small group of pioneering students.
Mayor Cobb stated the HHS ESports program has grown substantially since then, qualifying for the playoffs each year since 2021, and this season fielded nearly 30 students across 9 unique NMAA sanctioned titles. He stated that ESports encourages students to maintain academic eligibility, build teamwork skills, and strive for excellence while representing Hobbs High School with dedication, discipline, and digital dexterity! Mayor Cobb extended his heartfelt congratulations to the student athletes, coaches, and staff for their outstanding accomplishments & inspiring contributions to the school and community.
The Mario Kart team completed an undefeated season and won a gold medal, and finds itself as the #1 seed in the Western United States! Other awesome accomplishments included the earning of gold in the championship match by the Splatoon 3 team, and the Hearthstone Team being undefeated in their regular season and achieving a silver medal after a nail-biting final!
Coach Chuck Pierce was present to accept the proclamation along with the team, stating his pride in the kids in a tough year, informing the Commission that they had started the season with the unexpected passing of their longtime head coach Anna Burns in November. He stated the team had all stepped up in a big way, coaches and staff included, to take the program to the next level, recruiting 12 players for the season in the midst of chaos, with the teams then achieving SO much. Go Eagles!
